1st Quarter Math Skills

We have learned a lot of new material this quarter in math. Just look at all that you have learned! I am very proud of each of you.

Comparing and Ordering
Positive and negative integers
Decimals

Division
Expressing remainders three different ways
Whole numbers (5 R2)
Fractions (5 ½)
Decimals (5.5)

Multi-Step Word Problems
Using all four operations to solve real world problems.

Transformations
Translation (Slide)
Rotation (Turn)
Reflection (Flip)

Classifying Angles
Acute
Right
Obtuse
Straight

Classifying Triangles
By their angles
Acute
Right
Obtuse
By their side lengths
Equilateral
Isosceles
Scalene

Today there are two questions that I would like you to take some time to reflecting on and write about.

Which one of these math skills did you enjoy the most? What else would you like to learn about this topic?

Which one of these concepts do you do find the most difficult? Can you explain why it was difficult? What can you do to help yourself know this skill better? What can I do to help you learn this skill?

Remember to type your comments in Microsoft Word and then paste them into the blog.

Thank you,
Mr. Ferrell

I enjoyed the inside angles of triangles. I don’t think I really want to know any thing else about inside angles of triangles.

The one that I thought that was the most difficult at first was the scalene, isosceles, and equilateral triangles. They were just kind of confusing at first. I don’t need any help any more with that method because now it’s just easy.

I enjoyed learning most about the scalene, etc…
I would like to learn more about the degrees.

The acute, obtuse, right, etc….
Acute was the hardest one to learn.
Know that it is less than 90degrees.

Favorite One
I enjoyed classifying angles the most. I would like to know how you could classify more angles. I’d like to know more on how to classify them right on by just looking at them and knowing the degrease.

Difficult One
I thought ordering decimal numbers was the hardest one. It didn’t make sense to me how to line them up and ordered them.

The math skill that I enjoyed the most was classifying angles by their sides and lengths. I can’t think of anything else that I would like to learn.

Them concept that I thought was the most difficult was comparing and ordering decimals. It was difficult because sometimes the numbers are bigger or smaller than what they look like and that confused me a little bit. I could practice it to improve on comparing and ordering decimals. We could go through a few problems with the class because the whole class had a little trouble with it.

I think that classifying angles. I like angles because it was easy. I also want to learn about what other types of angles are there in the world. I wonder what angle is more than 180°.

The skill that I thought was the tough fist is comparing and ordering decimals. It’s confusing because when you get to the negatives the larger number is the least. And the least number is the greater number. I you can help me with finding a way to help me remember greater the number in the negatives the less the value is.

I enjoyed learning about classifying triangles. I didn’t know very much about them before 6th grade, and it was fun to learn a new skill. I would like to learn more about them.
The skill that was the hardest for me was transformations because I had forgotten how to do them from lack of practice. I could practice more so I could remember how to do them.

Colton,

I enjoyed Classifying Angles the most because I liked doing the picture project. I would like to do another project on classifying angles. I would like to know if you can make a square with an obtuse angle in it.

I think that comparing and ordering decimals is the most difficult concept we learned about because I get confused when it is a negative decimal. To learn it better I can try to use it in everyday life. I could also practice it more.

My favorite skill out of all of the skills we learned was classifying triangles. I don’t know if there is any thing more I want to know about triangles.

The most difficult skill is my most favorite skill witch is classifying triangles. It is very difficult because there are lots of long words like isosceles, scalene and equilateral. I think that I have almost perfected it but I still get mixed up in my mind sometimes, I just need to memorize their definitions in my head. There is not much you can do cause I have just got to sort out my head.

The subject that I enjoyed the most was angles; angles are fun because you could do so many activities with angles. It’s like when we took pictures; it was fun because we could find angles in so many places that we didn’t even see until we were looking. Like the arrow on the front door of the school, we found an obtuse angle. Which I thought was really cool. Now that I now about angles I see the school as something else than just brick walls.

The subject that I didn’t get as well as the others was classifying triangles. Classifying triangles was kind of difficult because there were three more types of angles I had to learn. At first it was really hard because I kept forgetting which definition goes with which. Like Isosceles I thought was scalene and I thought scalene was isosceles. It was confusing. The easiest one had to be equilateral because it sounds like it has the word equal in it so I knew that that ment that all the sides were equal.

The math skill that I enjoyed the most was classifying triangles because you had to find out what type it was. I would like to learn more about classifying triangles because it a fun and easy skill.

I think that division was the hardest skill. It was difficult because you had to write the remainder as a whole number, as a fraction, and as a decimal. To help me I could reread the problem and see what I would write the remainder as so I don’t get the problem wrong. I don't think that i need any help on this i just need to read the problem.

I enjoyed angles because we got to do a lot of fun things with angles. I would like to learn about all the angles because there are a lot of different kinds of angles in the world.
The hardest thing we did in math was decimals. It was hard for me to me because I didn’t get how to line up the numbers. What I can do to improve this skill is to practice. Mr. Ferrell can help me improve this activity by some practice.

The math skills I enjoyed the most were classifying triangles by Isosceles, scalene, and equilateral. I’d like to learn more about classifying triangles by angles like acute, obtuse, and straight.

The hardest math skill to me was multi step word problems. Because if you do a lot it gets to your head and you just don’t get it. And you get lost sometimes during the process of solving it because your doing it step, by step by step. I’d like to learn more about them so I don’t get confused in the future.

The topic that I enjoyed the most was probably division because it was really easy to learn. I would like to learn more how to turn the problems into a decimal because that was the hardest one to turn the problem into.

The concept that I found the hardest was comparing and ordering decimals. The reason this concept was the hardest is because I really did not know it the beginning of the year.

I enjoyed the angles because we got to do a lot of fun things with them.Angles can be fun anyway. You could be doing the most boring worksheet in the world on angles but it would still be fun. My favorite thing we did with angles was the camera project. We got to go around the whole school to take pictures. The reason I like angles is because there fast to learn and easy to learn to. I like how they can be anywhere and you don’t even know it because there could be an angle right in front of you and you wont even notice. That’s the angle I enjoyed the most. I think I learned pretty much all of it but I want to learn who made angles and how they figured out the name and how to classify them. I think that’s kind of weird.

I find two steps word problems the most difficult because you would be doing the right thing but then you would forget the second step. I don’t really get it that much but I got them right on the practice QT. I don’t know what I can do to help maybe I could ask my teacher if he could run through it with me so I can hit the right target. That’s why it’s the most difficult for me.

I think angels where the most fun because they where the easiest. I would like to learn how to find the exact number of degrees.

Even though I already knew how to dived I thought division was the hardest. I think it was the most difficult because it takes the most time. I could practice at home. You could make us practice for homework.

I liked classifying angles because it was really easy for me. I would like to learn more about transformations.

If I had to pick one I would probably say that transformations were a little difficult. It was a little confusing because I couldn’t remember witch one was what. I could think of transformations when I see someone flip or something. You can go over it again if we haven’t gone over it in awile.

I thought that angles were the most enjoyed to me. Also another thing that I thought was fun was a game that we played to get integers in order in an amount of time. Math is fun now.

Some hard subjects to me are triangles, and multi step problems. Multi step problems are hard because when you do one little mistake your answer is wrong. Triangles are difficult to me because when a triangle has one acute angle it is not an acute angle.

I enjoyed division the most. It is just so simple for me to understand. The one I’d like to learn more about, though, is an angle that is more than 180° and less than 270°. What about 270°? What about more than 270° but less than 360°? What about just 360°? What are those called?

I didn’t think that any of them gave me difficulty. The one that I didn’t know all about the skill was triangles, but once I was given information about it, I grasped the concept pretty well. Other than that, I don’t think I had any difficulty on not knowing or not grasping the concept.
